The name, a combination of the Portuguese language and the Gaelic language, represents the cultural diversity of the group. In Gaelic, the word 'nua' means new, fresh and pure. In Portuguese the same word means naked. The creation of the name of this project considered the polysemy of the word as a metaphor for the repertoire and the goals of the choir. In this way, Voz Nua refers to 'pure voice' or 'voice without instruments'.

Since their first rehearsals in February 2012, the members of Voz Nua have participated in a wide range of activities, with concerts, world premieres of some pieces, recordings, videos, collaborations with artists from the region, partnerships with the University of Aveiro, Câmara Municipal de Aveiro and TedX Aveiro, and participation in two international competitions.
