We are delighted to confirm that Eurico Carrapatoso will be the Composer of the FICA Festival in 2017, with his choral works featured as the set works for the mixed choir, female voice and male voice categories.

Carrapatoso, Eurico (b. 1962, Mirandela). Portuguese composer of orchestral, chamber, choral and vocal works that have been performed across Europe, Asia and the Americas. He is also the recipient of many awards.

Eurico Carrapatoso graduated from the Faculdade de Letras da Universidade in Porto with a degree in History in 1985. In that same year, he began his musical studies with José Luís Borges Coelho and Fernando Lapa. In 1987, he took the fugue examination under the supervision of Cândido Lima at the Conservatório de Música in Porto. In 1988, he began his composition studies at the Escola Superior de Música in Lisbon with Constança Capdeville. His final studies were with Jorge Peixinho from 1991-93 at the Conservatório Nacional de Música, where he graduated with the highest classification.

He was Assistant Professor of Social and Economic History at Portucalense University.

He has taught composition at several institutions, including the Escola Superior de Música, the Academia Nacional Superior de Orquestra and the Academia de Amadores de Música in Lisbon. Since 1989, he has taught Analysis and Techniques of Musical Composition at the Conservatório Nacional de Música.

His works have been performed by most major orchestras, ensembles and choirs in Portugal, Europe, Asia, Brasil and the USA.

Eurico Carrapatoso has won several awards, including the Lopes-Graça Prize (1998-99) and the Francisco de Lacerda Prize (1999); in addition, his works have represented Portugal three times at the UNESCO International Rostrum of Composers (Paris, 1998, 1999 and 2006)

In May 2001 he won the Prémio da Identidade Nacional. In June 2004 he was decorated by the President of the Portuguese Republic with the Commendation of the Order of the Infante Dom Henrique. In May 2011 he won the Prémio Árvore da Vida.

Eurico Carrapatoso has received commissions from numerous institutions, in Portugal and abroad, including the Casa da Música do Porto, the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos, the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, the Radiodifusão Portuguesa, the Teatro Aberto, the Teatro Nacional de São João, the Orquestra Nacional do Porto, the Orquestra Sinfónica Portuguesa, all the main Portuguese festivals of music, the Orquestra Sinfônica Brasileira and the University of Michigan.
